My name is Monse. I'm back to OMLI. I came last year and I was part of session 3. When I came I met new people and also had a lot of fun. I learned new leadership skills. I made new friends and experienced new things. I'm glad most of the staff from last year are here, but I also miss the ones that aren't. I am here because I really enjoyed it when I came last year. And I also want to improve my leadership skills, and meet new people.
Day 2: Challenge Course
Today we went to the challenge course. While I was there many memories from last year came back. The first thing I tried at the challenge course was the zipping line, it was really fun. At first I felt really hipped up and exited because it wasn't available last year. As I started to go up the ladder I could feel my feet shaking. Once I was up there my hands were shaking too. One of the staff members was explaining me how to let go. It was time to jump and part of me didn't want to do it but the other part of me did. While I was doubting my self many of the staff members and students were encouraging me to jump. That's when I got more self confident. And I jumped. It was really fun, I'm glad I did it.
Today I noticed that our group got a little bit more united. At times people don't want to participate which makes it harder to interact with each other. But I must say we got more united then when we were. I really hope that by the end of the week we're closer to each other. I was happy with the friends and connections I made with the people that came with me last year.
Using New Technology
I'm pretty exited with the technology we're using this year. It's fancy and fascinating. I've never used it before. I think it's better then the one we were using last year. We get more time and this year I'm actually able to finish my assignments on time.
It was pretty awesome. We first went to Hatfield Science labs, then to the aquarium and the beach. I learned new things about dissecting fish. It was pretty cool but gross at the same time. I've never dissected a fish or any other animal before but it was a good experience. The aquarium was cool too. The candy was really tasty. During lunch we were playing watermelon and dancing cumbia. The week went by fast even if the days felt long. At the beach we all did a good job at building the human pyramid. And the capture the flag game was pretty cool too.
Hoy practicamos para el show de talento. Hicimos una novela que se llama "A La Que Le Comieron El Mandado" con los protagonistas Edson como Panfilo. Yuliza como La Chona. Noe como Don Panchito. Andie como La Candy. Yaned como Marichela y yo como Pancracia. La verdad me diverti mucho practicando la novela. Aunque a la mera hora nos ganaron los nervios y no salio tan bien como lo habiamos practicado asi que tuvimos que improvisar. Pero aun asi todos hicimos un muy buen trabajo y logramos sacarle risas a nuestros compañeros y al staff. Asi que el oso valio la pena (;
At the Dance & Talent Show
Thank You David for DJ'ing for us at the baile! I personally had a great time and I'm pretty sure the rest of the group did too. So Thanks for that! I also had a great time at the Talent Show. All the acts were awesome. Dancing the Caballo Dorado song. The Rings of Doom and Magic Show. La Hora Pico and the dance performance of Nancy & Hilda. Good Job to all of us! We all did a fantastic job!
Thank You All For Making This Happen Once Again! Se Que Detras de Todo Este Trabajo Hay Muchas Noches Sin Dormir Pero Se Que Al Final Todo Vale La Pena. This Year I Improved My Leadership Skills, Discovered New Talents, Gained New Knowledge,Made New Friends, Made Important Connections. Y Todo Esto Fue Gracias a Su Ayuda y Apoyo! Thank You To Every Single One Of You For Making Positive Impacts In Our Lifes! I Must Say I Didn't Feel The Same As When I Came The First Time But I Still Enjoyed It. I Saw So Much Improvement In The Program! Keep Up The Good Work Because I'm Sure This Program Will Keep Changing Lifes, Just Like It Changed Mine! Gracias Por Permitirme Regresar Una Vez Mas. Los Voy A Extrañar Mucho Y Como No Me Gustan Las Despedidas No Es Un Adios Si No Un Hasta Luego!
After practicing for the Talent Show we got the opportunity to talk with representatives from different colleges. I got really sad and dissapointed when they told me I couldn't assit to OSU because I'm undocumented. And it only got worse when different colleges said the same thing. They all said my only choice was a Private School or a Community College. Many thougths came to my mind. "Just because I don't have papers?" "They haven't even looked at my resume or the things I've done and they already declined my admission". I felt like if all the doors were closing on me just because I wasn't a citizen. I couldn't help it and I teared up. But I wasn't alone one of my best friends was there with me. He cried with me, he felt what I was feeling, because we're in the same situation. Gima and Esme were there with us too. Gima told me that her older sister made it and she was undocumented too. And Esme told me that it was people like us that encouraged her to do what she was doing. And that anything is possible. Later that evening Gaby told me about her experience at Chemeketa and to be honest it sounded better then I would of imagined. Now that I look back to this day I realize that it’s one of those moments were you think you have no other choices, and that you let the negative thougths get to you. Even though I still have two more years until graduation I will always look back to this day. I will because it taught me that not everything will always go your way. That life puts our through obstacles but if you don't give up you can always overcome them no matter what. El chiste no es poder, si no querer. Porque si se quiere, se puede. It made me realize the importance of the Dream Act. Because I know I'm not the only dreamer. There are plenty of students wearing the same shoes as me. Perhaps some have it tougher then others but we all have something in common. The American Dream. I still don't know how, but I am going to college either to a Community College or a Private one. I am going to make it. And I hope with all my heart, that all the students wearing the same shoes as me succeed and accomplish their dreams too. Echenle muchas ganas porque SI SE PUEDE!
